Coding workflows · Bracket nesting depth

03
Built around your work

A concrete starting point

Find the maximum nesting depth of a string containing only round, square and curly brackets. Accept the empty string with depth zero, but reject crossed pairs, unmatched brackets and every other character, including spaces.

01

Open the context

Choose the project folder and name the files or behavior involved.

02

Define the change

Describe the input, expected output and boundaries that must stay intact.

03

Inspect the work

Review the proposed edits and any commands before relying on their result.

04

Check the outcome

Compare actual behavior with the expected result. If a check fails, investigate it before applying more changes.

Bracket nesting depth

def bracket_depth(text):
    if type(text) is not str:
        raise ValueError("bracket.type")
    stack, peak = [], 0
    pairs = {')': '(', ']': '[', '}': '{'}
    for char in text:
        if char in "([{":
            stack.append(char)
            peak = max(peak, len(stack))
        elif char in pairs:
            if not stack or stack.pop() != pairs[char]:
                raise ValueError("bracket.order")
        else:
            raise ValueError("bracket.alphabet")
    if stack:
        raise ValueError("bracket.unclosed")
    return peak

The example is a starting point for a real project, not a claim that generated code is already tested. Adjust paths, dependencies and expected behavior to match your application.
